Section 01What is WordPress

What is WordPress?

WordPress is free, open-source software for building websites. It started as a blogging tool and now runs everything from personal blogs to company sites, news portals and online shops.

You write and lay out pages in the block editor, change the whole design with a theme, and add what you need with plugins. Running it on your own server keeps the code, the content and the visitors' data with you.

  • Free and open source (GPL)
  • Block editor, no code needed
  • Thousands of themes and plugins

Section 02Features

What you can build with WordPress

  • Block editor

Write and lay out pages from blocks and ready-made patterns, without touching code.

  • Themes

Change the look of the whole site at once, or edit the header, footer and templates in the site editor.

  • Plugins

Add forms, SEO, caching, memberships and much more from the plugin directory.

  • WooCommerce

Turn the site into an online store with products, a cart and payments.

  • Users and roles

Give writers, editors and admins their own accounts, each with the rights they need.

  • Media and languages

Keep images and video in the media library, and publish in any language.

Section 03Two ways to run it

Docker or your web stack: you choose.

ServerAvatar runs WordPress both ways. Pick the one that fits the server you have.

  • Docker

1-Click Recipe on a Docker server

    • WordPress 7.1 and MariaDB 11.4 run in their own containers.
    • Every site gets its own database, with separate passwords the panel generates.
    • Files and the database live in Docker volumes, so they survive container updates.
    • Each container is limited to 512 MB by default. Change it under Memory limit.
    • You finish WordPress's own five-minute setup in the browser.

Best for keeping every site fully separate.

  • Web stack

One-click install on Nginx, Apache or OpenLiteSpeed

    • WordPress runs on the server's own web server and PHP, with the PHP version you pick per site.
    • The panel creates its database on the server's MySQL or MariaDB.
    • Site title, admin user and password go in the create form, so the site is ready when it opens.
    • Staging, one-click clone and Magic Login are built in.
    • Each site gets its own system user by default.

Best for staging copies and many sites on one server.

Section 04Requirements

What you need

A fresh Ubuntu server you can log in to as root. The installer checks all of this before it changes anything.

Your server

  • Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 or 26.04 LTS
  • x86-64 or ARM64 processor
  • At least 3 GB of free disk space
  • Ports 80 and 443 free, or used by Nginx, Apache or OpenLiteSpeed
  • Any amount of RAM: the installer adds swap until RAM and swap reach 3 GB

WordPress on Docker

  • A server installed with the Docker stack
  • Two containers: WordPress 7.1 and MariaDB 11.4
  • 512 MB memory limit per container by default; about 200 MB in use at idle on our test server

WordPress on a web stack

  • A server installed with the LEMP, LAMP or OpenLiteSpeed stack
  • MySQL or MariaDB, installed from the panel's Setup page
  • PHP 7.4 or newer; WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or newer
