Gotify on your own server, in one click.
Send notifications from your scripts, servers and apps with one HTTP request, and get them in the browser or on your Android phone with Gotify, on a server you own. ServerAvatar runs it in Docker and sets up the admin password, storage and HTTPS for you.
- Web app and Android app
- HTTPS on its own
- Your server, your messages
- Gotify
- HTTPS on
- Scheduled backups
- Web firewall
- AI bot blocker
Section 01What is Gotify
What is Gotify?
Gotify is an open-source server for sending and receiving messages, written in Go. Your scripts, servers and apps send a message with one HTTP request to its REST API, and Gotify delivers it in real time over a WebSocket to its web interface and its Android app.
Senders and receivers are kept apart: an application can only send messages, a client can only receive them, and each user sees only the messages of the applications they created. Running it on your own server means no third-party push service sees your alerts.
- Free and open source (MIT)
- REST API to send, WebSocket to receive
- Written in Go, one container
Section 02Features
What you can do with Gotify
Send with one request
POST a title, a message and a priority to /message with an application token, from curl, any programming language or the gotify CLI.
Live in the browser
The web interface receives messages over a WebSocket, shows a browser notification for each one and plays a sound from priority 4 up.
The Android app
Get push notifications on your phone with the Gotify app from Google Play or F-Droid. The priority decides between silent, sound and vibration.
A token for each sender
Create an application for each script or server, each with its own token and image. Tokens are shown only once, and you can rotate them.
Markdown and click actions
Render a message as Markdown, open a link when the notification is tapped, or show a large image in the Android notification.
Users and single sign-on
The administrator creates users, and each one has their own applications and messages. Sign-in through an OpenID Connect provider is supported.
Section 03Requirements
What you need
A fresh Ubuntu server you can log in to as root. The installer checks all of this before it changes anything.
| Requirement | Gotify on Docker |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04 LTS (x86-64) |
| CPU | 1 core or more |
| RAM | 1 GB or more |
| Disk | 10 GB or more (25 GB recommended) |
| Containers | Gotify 3.1, SQLite built in |
| Ports | 80 and 443 open |
Gotify publishes no CPU or RAM minimum, so these are the floor for any server: 1 GB is Ubuntu Server's minimum memory. Disk: about 6.5 GB is in use once the panel and Gotify are installed on our test server; 25 GB is Ubuntu's recommendation.
Section 04Install
How to install Gotify
Every step happens in the ServerAvatar panel. No terminal needed.
Pick Gotify in 1-Click Recipes
On your server, open Applications, click Create application and search for Gotify under 1-Click Recipes.
Name it and choose a domain
Give the app a name and use your own domain, or a temporary one that works right away. The panel creates a system user for it.
Create it
Click Create application. The panel starts Gotify, turns HTTPS on and shows the admin username and the password it generated. Copy them somewhere safe.
Sign in and change the password
Open your domain and sign in as admin with the generated password; Gotify's usual admin / admin does not work. Change the password in the web interface under Users: the environment variables only create this first account, so changing them later does nothing. Then add an application under Apps and send your first message with its token.
